Working With an Interior Designer

Working with an interior designer can be fun. It's a great way to get fresh new ideas and turn an ordinary space into extraordinary. Interior Designers have expertise in choosing fabrics, colors that will blend with existing rooms, and coordinating items you already have with new purchases that will give your space more pizzazz.

When choosing a decorator be sure to shop around. You would not generally buy the first car you see without checking out the competitors selection or other models. Meet with many designers and have them give you a preliminary idea of what they would do with the space. Compare prices, and also be sure to get references. Sometimes word of mouth is the best way to find a decorator. If your co-worker used a company and you love the outcome, that is a positive reference!

After you have selected a designer, sit down and tell him or her your ideas for the space. Be sure to mention key elements such as how much the space is used, what organization you will need, and ideal outcomes you are looking for. It will help avoid costly mistakes along the way. If you are remodeling a family room, you may need space for children's toys, or a way to hide electronic equipment. Sometimes people are searching for a way to coordinate their antique furniture. You may also prefer earth tones to bold contemporary colors, and now is the time to speak up. Don't be afraid you will offend this designer. You are paying for his or her services and they want you to be happy with the outcome. If you are a happy client, you are more willing to tell friends and family about your positive experience.

There are many important things to consider before having your designer start her transformation. Price is always a factor. Be upfront about the amount of money you have chosen for this project. If you find he or she is suggesting costly items or top of the line fabric, mention that you may want to find a less expensive alternative. Designers understand that everyone has a budget. Most importantly, have an open mind. Interior Designers are skilled and trained at knowing how to maximize your space and give it a personality all its own. You may discover your designer has ideas you never thought of!
